Downton Abbey, like plantation houses, delivers fantasy over brute reality | Michael Henry Adams

The American south may seem a long way from the estates of England, but in both places a veil of caprice covers harsh truths The son of a Scottish immigrant who worked as a servant, Donald Trump could hardly wait for his banquet at Buckingham Palace. A seat next to Elizabeth II conferred a sense of accomplishment little else could. To many, such behavior from an American president Gone With the Wind, I saw plantation houses for which I thought I could sell my soul. It seemed such an alluring way of life. No wonder people visit Savannah or Charleston. They, like me, have imagined themselves in the masters place. No work to be done, fanned on white-pillared porches, sipping …

‘Can’t I just say it’s tasty?’ Why food critics go too far

Its easy to write beautifully if you can work yourself into a frenzy of love or loathing. Unfortunately, most meals are just quite pleasant I was a restaurant reviewer for 10 years, and then I was let go, as they say. I expected to be distraught because I would miss the money, and also the food. Instead, it was an incredible relief. Reviewing food is fine when you hate a lot of things; it is fine when you stand ready and willing to do an elaborate and caustic hit job on an orange sorbet because you have been either absolutely loving or completely hating relatively benign things since you could talk. It is fine when you have quite a dedicated …

Reconstructing a killing: exhibit challenges police narrative of Chicago man’s death

New art exhibit uncovers what appear to be missteps by police that led to shooting of Harith Augustus In the video that Chicago police released to calm outrage over another killing of a black man by a white police officer, Harith Augustus appears to be unholstering a gun as hes shot dead in the street. But a new art exhibit by the Invisibility Institute and Forensic Architecture, unveiled as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, reveals a more complex case, uncovering what appear to be a number of missteps by police and challenging the official narrative of the 2018 shooting. It is a seemingly unlikely medium for seeking social justice, but one that might become more common. I hope this …

The billions Saudi Arabia spends on air defenses may be wasted in the age of drone warfare

(CNN)Saudi Arabia has spent billions on state-of-the-art air defense and early warning systems, but a mix of cruise missiles and drones was able to penetrate its airspace on Saturday, inflicting substantial damage on the world’s largest oil processing plant at Abqaiq. In the aftermath of the attacks, US President Donald Trump has ordered new sanctions on Iran. While Trump has not definitely stated that Iran was behind the strikes, others in his administration have pinned blame on Tehran. Iran has denied responsibility for Saturday’s attack. According to a source familiar with the Saudi/US investigation into the attacks, the cruise missiles flew at very low altitude to avoid detection and would have avoided traveling over the Persian Gulf where US and …

FAA needs to be ‘humble’ after 737 MAX crashes, administrator says

Washington (CNN)Federal Aviation Administration chief Stephen Dickson says his agency must be “humble” about areas for improvement after approving the Boeing 737 MAX, the plane models that crashed twice in less than six months killing 346 people. He spoke prior to visiting Boeing’s Seattle-area headquarters on Thursday where he operated a 737 MAX simulator. The agency said company management briefed him on their work to fix the plane’s systems. Earlier this month, CNN reported on the signs of a disconnect between worldwide regulators, which a Boeing official acknowledged could lead to the plane returning to service in the US while remaining grounded in some other countries or regions. Dickson, who took the agency’s helm just over a month ago, said …

Couple Spends A Year And $65k To Build Their Dream Yurt And It Looks Amazing

Home is where love resides, where memories are created, and family feels welcome, or however the saying goes. Be it all those cheesy things or not, every person needs a home. Some inherit it, others buy it, and then there are those who build it with their own hands. Zach Both and Nicole Lopez are the kind of people who shaped their own den with the help of friends and family. They didn’t just build any house, as one would assume. The couple decided to go for a yurt. And while the word might bring images of simplicity and minimalism to mind, this yurt’s interior design tells a completely different story. Both created a site titled “Do It Yurtself” where …

Back to lunar orbit there is still more to uncover.” According to NASA, the “educational parody” is a part of a volunteer outreach project. “The lyrics and scenes in the video have been re-imagined in order to inform the public about the amazing work going on at NASA and the Johnson Space Center,” NASA said on YouTube. “Through the agency’s Artemis lunar exploration program, we will use innovative new technologies and systems to explore more of the Moon than ever before,” the …
